You could just snuggle up at home, but if you’re adventurous or suffering from cabin fever, then head out this winter, and remember to be prepared.

Where can you go?
No matter where you go in South Africa, it will be cooler. In the Cape you will have to face a fair amount of rain, in the central part temperatures routinely dip below zero. Up north, around places like Nelspruit you could be forgiven for wondering whether they experience a winter at all!
Game reserves are a great option in winter; the grass is shorter and animals are easier to spot. Winter is hiking season in the Drakensberg and many other places in South Africa. Dare we mention the open skies of Sutherland?
What should you take?
Camping in cold environments requires suitable equipment like winter sleeping bags, clothing etc. Don’t forget your Stanley flask or mug for hot drinks along the way. Nice additions include a portable gas heater, no one likes to suffer! If you have space then go with a Cadac Safire heater on a gas bottle, otherwise look at more compact options that use disposable gas canisters.
If you are thinking of camping in the Western Cape in winter, you will need a strong tent to cope with potential rain and windy conditions.

Things to do
Hiking and game viewing have already been mentioned. Near the mountains, snow spotting is popular. Touring this beautiful country by car and visiting the various farms and viewpoints is a real treat. In the Western Cape wine routes are a must.
