Being in the great outdoors is the most wonderful experience. Those who venture out to places without electricity may miss certain comforts. Vehicles and portable solar panels can provide power, but this will most likely be 12V DC. Your home appliances will simply not work. Fortunately, today there is a wide choice of equipment and appliances that run of 12V. There are even some innovative appliances that you can now take along on your next overlanding trip or to your off-grid campsite.

In-car Tech
Heading out on an adventure or camping holiday, chances are you will be going by car. There are so many great options for charging phones, cameras etc. from your car cigarette lighter plug. For larger devices, you may want to connect directly to the car’s battery. Be careful not to drain your primary battery or you won’t be able to start your car again!

12V Appliances
Few things beat a campfire and even cooking on gas has a certain appeal. However, sometimes it is not possible to start a fire, or time is against you. There are some great new 12V appliances on the market these days. From fans to cool you down, to 12v fridges and freezers – to cooking appliances and more.
Miss your air fryer? Now there is a 12V version. Fancy a toasted sandwich on the road? Check out this 12V sandwich press.

I need mains!
If you really need mains (220V AC) power, then there is the option of using an inverter. This wonderful device converts 12V DC into 220V mains power. Inverters, however, use a lot of battery power and you are limited to low watt appliances. Sorry – no air conditioners!
Generally, 600 to 2000W inverters are a good size to go for. Sensitive appliances like computers may require a pure sine wave inverter.

So, whether you are spending a lot of time in your car and need to charge up your equipment, overlanding or heading to that rustic off-grid campsite – there are so many great 12V options these days to power your adventure.
